Just a good question. I adore the book, but it is so much different than the musical or the movie. I've only see bits and peices of the musical on TV and such, but I think the movie is my favorite.

I've seen the Play recently, and compared to it, the movie was absolute dog crap.
Although I do adore the movie beyond all adoration. ^^ It's a really tough choice. and the book is so different from both the movie nad the play that they really can hardly be compared.

I'm definitely going to say the Musical. I am so obsessed with the music. SO obsessed.

I agree!!! I'm actually listening to the movie soundtrack right now - my Michael Crawford CD seems to have run off. >.>

The book is most certainly mine. I love Leroux. I have two translations of it.
Susan Kay's Phantom is fantastic too.

Two translations! Is one like in French and the other in English or something neat like that?

Nope, they're both English. And both different.
Different translators have different ideas about what Leroux meant. I have the Leonard Wolf translation which has all the footnotes telling you what things mean. Because of this, it's huge and thick. It can also be a little hard to understand, because he's tried to keep the old French alive by putting a lot of the stuff in old English.
The new one (that I got yesterday) is by an unknown translator and I found it for $5 at the bookstore yesterday. It's in modern English and is nice and thin, so I can put it in my bag and read it whenever I want.

I few years back I bought the book and read it over the summer. I forget who translated it though. I have a few CDs of Sara Brightman singing, she was Christine in the musical at one time, though I never saw it. I saw the recent POTO and also a parody called the Phantom of the Paradise. I have to admit that I like the parody the most, though the book was fun and very interesting and I liked the parts that were about Erik. I usually prefere the books to the movies.

Yeah, Sarah Brightman sang with Michael Crawford (who was PERFECT).

I have to say I didn't like the phantom in the recent movie. His singing slightly disturbed me, if that is the right word.

I'm not fond of the Movie AT ALL. emmy had to rely on a falsetto to finish her songs...and dont get me started on GB. I <3 him as an actor, but he cant sing the Phantoms role. andhe had a wimy deformity.
I ADORE the stage show. It's pure magic. Gary Mauer is my personal favorite actor to fill Eriks role--his wife, beth southard is christine, and they are too adorable onstage together, and both have breathtakingly beautiful voices.

I beg to differ. I know Gerard was no where near perfect, but I absolutely loved Emmy in the role of Christine. I think she did wonderfully for a girl with almost no vocal training. Yes, they could have picked an Opera singer who was more experienced, but it really gave her a chance to shine and now she's famous. I think she did incredibly well under the circumstances, and I absolutely love her. ♥
By the way - I totally have Gary Mauer's autograph. xDDDD

yes, Emmy did do a great job, and she looked the part, which I guess is a good thing? The only opera singer I can think of is an opera singer whose name I cannot spell, grrr.

i agree with charlotte, i LOVE the movie and LOVE the music, i think they all did very wonderfully, and besides the directors didn't want someone more experienced, they wanted fresh faces. (btw, emmy is a tad experienced, she's been in other operas)
