"Does anyone else think it a bit weird that I was chosen for the understudy at the last minute?" Roslin said as she braided her hair and then tied it with a green ribbon. "I mean, I know I'm not the best singer in here, not even close to Kristine and lots of others." Rose knew, kinda, why she was chosen, but didn't see why exactly. She delivered some papers for the Phantom, big whoop. That doesn't make her a subsitute Prima Dona in any case.

((Interesting topic title. XD)) Alyna, who had come in a few minutes earlier to borrow a pin, was sitting in a wooden chair. "The Phantom chose you," she said knowingly. "But I don't know why, either."

Rose didn't say anything. She just finished her braid and then slipped quietly into her simple nightgown as the girls continued to discuss.

Solange was sitting in the corner reading a novel as she was often want to do.
Looking up, she smiled sadly. "I admit I was a little mad," she said, "I've worked so hard my entire life for an opportunity and I thought that because I knew the entire cast's parts I might be chosen. But I wasn't, and I don't hate you because you were."
She marked her page and closed the book. "I still think it's strange that the Phantom can influence everything in this Opera House, though."

"Isn't it though, Solange?" Rose said, turning to the other chorus girl, who was both superior to her in age and experience. "How is it that one man can control so much with everyone knowing so little of him? I find it a bit...curious," Roslin concluded.

"Me too," Solange mused. "I mean, I could understand him having that power if he funded the Opera House, but I hear rumors that the managers have to pay him an allowance." Solange lowered her voice. "It seems to be almost blasphemy to say so," she continued, "But what if he is controlling the Populaire and it's managers by way of something illegal?"
Solange clenched her fists, almost fearfully. "I truly don't mean it," she said, as though she was talking to the ceiling. "I hope he's not offended."

"If he is, I doubt that he would do anything you you. He needs a back-up incase Kristine gets sick," Rose laughed. "I wouldn't want to be an understudy for a lead, not quite yet. I don't have enough time to practice two parts." Roslin joked as she sat with her back to the wall.

((Okay, Solange being an understudy for Kristine is news to me))
"He did things to Carlotta," Solange said, shaking her head. "I think he was behind her problems at the Opera. And she's a lead, even if she's not the lead."

"Nobody really likes Carlotta though, do they?" Alyna laughed. "The Phantom's a person, just like the rest of us. He just happens to be a genius, and a lot turn out mad. Not that that had anything to do with him choosing you, Rose," she added hastily, hoping Rose wasn't offended.

((She was saying, not that Solange is an understudy, but that she should be))
"Haha, no offense taken," Roslin replied with a smile as she pulled the thin covers over her knees.

((Ah, gotcha))
"Carlotta's not that bad," Solange said, trying to be diplomatic. "I mean, sure, she's annoying and overbearing, but that doesn't give someone permission to try and kill her."

"That was her own fault," protested Alyna. "The Phantom didn't break her nose."

Roslin was going to mention that she didn't think he was trying to kill her, but she kept it to herself. Pulling her knees to her chest, she rested her chin on them.

"I heard something about him giving a present to Kristine after the show," Alyna gossipped.

"Yeah, so did I," Rose said briefly. She had seen Kristine showing it to someone early. She felt as though she had indeed seen the dress before, but she knew she really never had. She didn't want to act to...suspicious or...she didn't know, but she wasn't going to go into detail about these things.
