(Interspersed with various portions of sketches, scraps of fabric, trim, and bits of embroidery or beadwork, there are a few personal entries in this rather mundane-looking tome.
I've only been here three days and already I feel as if this is the world I was born to be in. Of course, that's not to say that I know what I am doing - on the contrary! I have revealed my ignorance of many of the workings of this business countless times. Papa would have loved to see it; I never seem to stop either blushing or grinning or biting back an impertinent remark.
Best wait to unleash my voracious wit upon the unsuspecting populace. Besides, I hear that the post of saucy instigator is already taken - as all good Opera houses, this one is already haunted. Not even finished yet and some nut is running about, startling the chorus girls into wide-eyed fits and dropping notes, (apparently, though I have yet to see one) as to 'his' wishes.
I do hope 'he' won't get too involved with the costuming, at any rate.
Opera ghost indeed.
Met a rather imposing woman by the name of Giry here, apparently the mother of one of the dancers who has managed to be raised in favor... I have yet to see her dance and would hardly have a good judgement as to whether this is justly earned. Giry (the elder) seems rather nice, and I have yet to meet the younger. Several other dancers came to the first round of measurements and fittings and one of them, an Alyna, seems to be the most honest of the bunch. I deal much better with bold-faced criticism than any semblance of toleration.
I am exhausted! I must sleep or I will be drawing sketches in my dreams!
