Here is Emmy's screen test for POTO. youtube.com/watch?v=pFTB6LD2Ij4&search=emmy%20rossumAre there any other singers here? If there are, I'd like to get your opinions on it. As a musician and a sometimes singer, I know I would be absolutely ripped to shreds for some of the wrong notes and notes being cut short. I have nothing against Emmy, just to let you know, I think she did a great job for an amateur, but after listening to this I can't believe she was cast!

I thought she was a perfect fit. I sing and have taken voice lessons and I didn't find it too bad. Ofcourse, it is just a screen test. The song was REALLY rushed, atleast I thought so. But I don't think it was too bad, yeah. I think she did excellent in the movie.

Hmm, could just possibly be that I've heard professional auditions and I know what a trained singer sounds like. Perhaps I've been in music for too long! (It just went ten years a few weeks back!)

WOW, Solange! How old are you?
I'd love to see it, but right now I'm 'doing homework' and can't turn up the sound. This weekend!

18. I started playing guitar when I was 6, but never really got into music until I was 8 when I started recorder. Since then I've played flute (my main instrument), piano, saxophone, piccolo, clarinet, trumpet and I've sung.

Wow, Solange, that's so cool! I used to dabble in a bit of piano and guitar, but I never really got into it. Like my char, I prefer adding to the music rather than making it. I can still play piano songs by ear, though, since the only song sheets we have are my (much) younger brother's and if he heard me playing he'd try to correct me. Emmy did pretty well in this, though I agree that it was rushed. You have to keep in mind that she was very nervous.

Yeah, I know. As I said, though, she is amateur and she did a good job for an amateur in the movie. There's no way she'll be going out tomorrow and playing Christine on the stage as she's a movie actress, not a Broadway/West End singer. She's also VERY young (she's not much older than me) and I know that even if I'd trained in singing my entire life, I wouldn't be out on stage singing Christine. It's a challenging part.
As I said, it was mainly the wrong notes that struck me - to my trained ears it sounded like she was singing in a slightly different key to the piano half the time.

I believe Emmy was 16 when they made the movie, so she would be around your age now.
As this topic has turned to music as well...hmmm...I play mostly piano. I took lessons for 11 1/2 years (I'm 15 now), but stopped at the beginning of this school year because I don't really need lessons anymore except for the accountability part. So I stopped that, and with the move it saved some money as well. I also sing, have done quite a bit of that with church chorus and solos at yg, mostly church singing, but I have song out at a few places. I'm not American Idol though, tehehehe. I can also play drums some and guitar, but one of my fingers is...mutated kinda because my brother chopped it off when I was 8 so I can't do chords or anything. Poor finger....

Diffy, that's great if you can still play like that. I wish I had musical talent like you guys. XD She's been in stage operas, I think. If you look up her bio on www.phantomthemovie.com/ , it gives her career life story.

Ouch!!! I'd die if I lost a finger - I rely on them so much, I wouldn't be able to reach keys on sax properly. I was going to be a music major at uni, but realised jobs are quite hard to come by in Australia so I changed to health sciences (I'm doing pharmacy).
Emmy's birthday is September in 86, and I'm December of 87, so she's just over a year older than me. She was actually 17 when they filmed the movie but 16 when she got the part.
ETA: She was in children's chorus when she was 12, which is MUCH different to Broadway, Alyna. She hadn't sung since then when she got the part.

Oops! I guess I didn't pay attention. Four years is a long time, but she still did very well as Christine. The past three days I've had Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again and Twisted Every Way stuck in my head, alternating between them during classes. XP

Lol! I always end up with 'Why so silent' stuck in my head, because I had Hugh Panaro singing it on my MP3 player. I <3 Hugh Panaro.

I don't think I'm supposed to have them!
I haven't been able to get any of Lestat though - I'm hoping that he'll put some of them on his CD when it comes out.

I know this is a late reply, but here's my input. Emmy's natural voice isn't bad, she just has very horizontal vowels so she sounds like she's like...5. Ha. Personally, I didn't think she sounded amazing in the movie either. However, I have a trained ear and I know I pick up imperfections all the time. So, it might sound different to someone who isn't constantly listening to that genre of music. That's just my opinion.
