Solange stood in one of the small rooms backstage, practicing the hard vocal exercise.
"Av-vez-zoa vi-ve-re, sen-za con-for-to, in mez-zoal por-to, pa-ven-to il mar."
Solange stopped as she hit the wrong note. "It's an F, not a G," she said grumbling. "Why can't I get this right?"

"Perhaps, my dear, you should try a F#," Madame Giry said peeking in.

Solange grabbed the sheet music that was lying on the table and studied it for a minute. "You're right," she said, calmly, "It is an F#, not an F or a G."
Solange re-sang the line, hitting the note perfectly. "Thank you, Madame Giry," she said. "I was afraid I was losing my touch."

"Well, that is a pretty difficult exercise for a chorus girl, atleast without a piano," Madame Giry replied.

Solange blinked. "It was one of the ones the older girls were given at the Conservatoire," she replied. "They were doing extra study, most had already performed as members of various opera companies. One of the girls taught it to me, but as you can see, I'm a little rusty."

"Practice my dear and you might surely advance, but only if you practice so much that you will have no faults and that no music is too hard. But I warn you my dear. You may practice until you die and either never reach that level or reach it and have nothing happen." Madame Giry nodded her head and left the girl to return to her work.

Solange smiled. Good advice, she thought to herself.
She sighed and started on the next line. "Av-vez-zoa vi-ve-re, sen-za con-for-to, in mez-zoal por-to, pa-ven-to il mar."
She liked that line. It was the same as the first, with the same rhythm, but completely different notes. And she got to push her upper register to its limit, finishing the study with a bang.
