"Rival?" laughed Estelle, "My dear, I am merely in the chorus here, If we were back in England, I doubt I would even be allowed to speak to you, which would be unfortuante indeed." She smiled disarmingly.

"Well, we do have such a glorious history of equality in France," Thérèse said quietly, half-heartedly returning to sweeping. "How fortunate I am."

"no!" said Estelle, biting her lip, "Forgive me if I offended you, believe me,it was not my intent. In England....things were...very different...." she sighed painfully.

"I've never been to England, so I'll have to take your word for it. Care to elaborate?" Thérèse asked, still not meeting her eyes.

Estelle considered for a moment, she could not tell the cleaner her real reason, for that could endanger the lives of them both. Besides...she didn't know whether or not she could trust her. "In England, I was the latest opera star, discovered at the age of seventeen, I enjoyed a year of fame and success..." she swallowed, staring at her feet.

"And then what?" Thérèse asked, moving on to another portion of the room. She began humming "Il Pleut, Il Pleut Bergère" again. "They found another girl who was a year younger, prettier, and could sing well enough to put her up on stage and your moment of fame was over? That's the story of most performers."

"No" Estelle, "that would have been hard in the Opera House I came from at Covent Garden, I was the youngest, prettiest and certainly slimmest person there!" she laughed, but her laughter died as she continued, "But...then the sweet fame began to taste bitter."

Thérèse looked at her wide-eyed, as though she had not quite heard Estelle correctly. After a few moments she shook her head, determining that she had, in fact, done so. "Congratulations," she said brusquely. "And what, might I ask, ruined the fortunes of such a beautiful, young, slim thing like yourself?"

Estelle gave a rueful smile, "My singing master."

Estelle smiled uncomfortably, "I would rather not go into details...." she said, then added muttering, "lest he find me here."

"A singing master that has the time, money, and inclination to bother with a former pupil? My my, you are a special case," Thérèse said lightly. "I need convincing."

Estelle raised her eyebrow, "What can I do to convince you?" she asked.

"So your relationship with your singing master soured. You seem to be giving the matter far more attention than one normally would and I see no reason for you to do so unless you feel the need to tell me why," Thérèse said and shrugged.

Estelle bit her lip, "...I am no normal singer...and he...has...is not your normal type of singing master...he has stranger...dangerous gifts." she swallowed, her face turning pale. She turned away in fright, holding up her hands, "Please ask me no more!" she implored.
