Sensing a brief break in the ever-constant rehearsal schedule of the various performers, Thérèse made for the practice rooms. These rooms really didn't get cleaned enough due to the fact they were almost always in use. She was therefore vaguely excited to see an unoccupied room. Of course, this was quickly darkened by the realization that she had no excuse not to clean it. C'est la vie.
She entered the room and began sweeping quietly. It was not long before the spirit of the room took hold of her, however, and she began to hum. Her pace quickened and the hum turned into a quiet song, then a lusty rendition of the traditional song "Il Pleut, Il Pleut Bergère" as she swept in time with the music.

Estelle, entered the room to rehearse and seeing someone else in there she was about to exit again.

The moment she heard the door open, Thérèse stopped singing and swung around, mortified. "Hello?" She called out, extremely embarrassed.

"Gorgive me for interrupting, I did not know there was anyone in here." murmured Estelle.

"It's alright..." Thérèse said quickly, sweeping very fast. "I'm sorry, this room is completely open, if you don't mind me just cleaning up a bit."

"Not at all, I am new here and have not yet learnt my way around, things are so very different in France..." she sighed, coming further into the room.

Thérèse muttered something under her breath about international building regulations, but looked up with a slight smile on her face. "Is that so? Then where, precisely, are you from, Mademoiselle?"

"London" said Estelle, "I have only been here three weeks, and I am still very lost, no-one has the time of day to show me around."

"Well then that's Paris, isn't it?" Thérèse said with a light tone and a tight smile. "After all, there is a great deal of difference between Paris and Blérancourt- where I am from- but no one took the time to explain it to me either. And it hardly helps you are from London. It is not as though most people have any great love of the English."

"True" she smiled ruefully, "You have a pleasent voice, why are you cleaning instead of singing with the rest of us?" she asked, walking over to her.

"Pleasant enough for singing nursery rhymes, not pleasant enough for singing opera. I've never had the slightest training. And so I clean." She punctuated her last sentence with a vigorous push of the broom. "And why, might I ask, did you move to Paris?"

Estelle went pale. She could not tell her the real reason, that she had come to escape from... "I-I thought I would prefer a change of s-scenery, the London Opera can be so...overbearing for it's singers sometimes." she stammered, not meeting the cleaner's gaze.

Thérèse laughed slightly, her lip twisting into a sneer that plainly indicated she found Estelle's excuses to be pathetically shakey. That said, she knew her place, as much as she resented it. "Of course, Mademoiselle," she answered politely, her eyes still lit with the discovery of a blatant lie.

Estelle fixed her with an imperious gaze, something of her inner diva showing through, but she blinked and lost it. Changing the subject, she said, "You should audition for the opera, your voice is more powerful than you think, trust me, I should know."

Thérèse caught the glare and responsed with her own dark glance. Estelle's brief attempt to restore her authority, albeit unconsciously, did not go over well with her. She had never responded well to a position of subordination. This had never endeared her to the people in her home village, where her family was thoroughly disgraced, but her grandmother still bitterly talked of what could have been had her own mother not been a filthy sleeper and destroyed the family name and if her own daughter hadn't taken the same path... Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. Thérèse was somewhat surprised she could still hear the old woman's angry rant word for word in her mind.
"Nevertheless, I still believe you flatter me. Why encourage a potential rival?" Thérèse asked, no longer meeting Estelle's eyes.
