"Curiousity killed the cat" said Estelle shrugging her bony shoulders, "I want to be able to find my way around without having to ask for directions every five minutes."

"And am I to be compensated for this time?" Thérèse asked, a small smile playing on her lips.

Estelle looked slightly taken aback and guilty, "I am afraid I have very little money with me, all I can really offer you in payment is a song, but from your views on the opera, you probably wouldn't want that." she smiled ruefully.

"No offense meant towards your voice, mademoiselle, as you sing for the opera and I do not, but you are quite correct I have no need for a song. I am paid for my time spent cleaning, I have a certain amount of work that must be done today. I would prefer not to be up later doing it without a certain compensation. If you can provide, then I will gladly take you down to the laundry room." Thérèse said politely, folding her arms.

Estelle sighed and said, "I am afraid I cannot pay you, I need all the money I can get in case I have to..." she paused, then decided it was best to tell her the truth or she would never hear the end of it, "In case I have to make a sudden run for it."

"You think that's likely?" Thérèse asked, still impassive. She debated the merits of taking Estelle down to the laundry room without pay. It would put her behind schedule and keep her up later, but that's not to say there weren't added benefits to be had.

Estelle said grimly, "You don't know my singing master" she shuddered, and opened the door, feeling she had said too much.

"We established that," Thérèse said, sweeping past her out the door. She stopped just outside and turned to Estelle. "Now, do you want to see the laundry room, hm? Not as exciting or grand as the rooms with which you're well acquainted, but I think it may do you some good."

"My mother was a gypsy" laughed Estelle, "I am used to the poorest of living conditions as well and the grandest!"

"A gypsy, hm?" Thérèse said, raising her eyebrow. "Isn't that romantic. So you weren't born in England? As I generally tend to associate gypsies with the continent. Follow me."
She set off ahead of Estelle, her broom tucked up under her arm. They set off through a labyrinth of back rooms and hallways that grew increasingly unglamorous the further away from the front they went.

Estelle stared about herself expectantly, smiling secretly as the went further into the labyrinth that led to the laundry. This scene brought back so many memories.

"And voilà."
Thérèse pushed open a door and they were hit with a wall of hot steam. The room was poorly lit, as no one wanted a great deal of candles adding to the already oppressing heat. Steam drifted out of a few small windows near the ceiling. Large, steaming vats were set up around the room over which women bent, scrubbing the dormitory bed linens and the clothing of the opera house's many occupants. Only one or two of the women, ranging from just out of girlhood to completely grey-haired, looked up when Thérèse and Estelle entered. Their hands and arms were red from the hot water and rubbed raw by the rough soap. Alongside the wall, a rack of clothing that needed more delicate treatment- costumes and the fashionable gowns of La Carlotta- seemed rather out of place. At the opposite end of the room, a doorway was left open for ventilation, exposing a small courtyard where things where hung to dry.
"Is that all?" Thérèse asked. She had removed her cap and begun fanning herself with it.

"This brings back so many memories." murmured Estelle, she looked over to Carlotta's costumes and smiled at their gaudiness. What poor mortals us wrecthed divas are, or were! She thought reflectively.

"Being brought up in the Opera House in England, when I was younger, some of the other chorus girls and myself would escape to the landry rooms and hide amonst the sheets and play tag amonst the scenery backstage." She laughed at the memory.
