"Well," Jeanne stopped. She had nothing to say. Instead she put down the tray and said, "I think we eat now, talk later."

"Okay," Alyna said. She picked up a roll of bread and bit into it happily.

Jeanne giggled. "So, what did you think of this young owner of the Opera Populaire? He seemed, well, a bit rich!"

"A bit?" Alyna said between mouthfuls. "Filthy, if you ask me. Why, did you dance with him?"

"Oh, no. He didn't ask, and if he did, I might have had to say no," Jeanne said with a grin.

Alyna laughed. "There seems to be an abundance of males suddenly."

"Yes there seems to be. And I'm thankful for it. It means we don't have to play the male parts anymore. What do you think?"

"True, but it means less people have parts in the opera."

"Yes, but only one is a singer, right? I mean, Yves is the only male singer apart from Philippe."

"I don't know what the others do," admitted Alyna. She finished off the bread.

"Yeah, well, maybe I can make enough money, find a man who could support me and who I can marry, so I can retire early and be able to live in comfort. Maybe have a child when I'm older," Jeanne told Alyna. "But, I haven't told anyone else this, so I am trusting you, please."

"I hope that you do," replied Alyna. "And no, I won't tell."

"Thank you. It's just, I don't think becoming the next Madame Giry is something I want to do, and I do respect her, don't get me wrong." Jeanne picked up a piece of bread. "What do you want to do with your life? Gonna continue singing until you retire?"

((Ballet, not singing)) "Once I have enough money to support myself, I'll probably move into a small house in Paris and live the rest of my days laughing at the rest of the world. It sounds evil, but I don't want to spend my life here."

(((oops, I meant that, don't know why I put singing.)))
"I don't blame you. I don't think anyone wants to spend the rest of their life here. How bout when you get that small house in Paris, you invite me over one day for coffee, and we can laugh at the world together for about half an hour." Jeanne took a bite from the piece of bread. "Of course if my feet don't fall off in a bloody mess first."
